Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening works by using bleaching agents, primarily hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, that penetrate tooth enamel to break down the molecular bonds of colored stains, making them smaller and less concentrated, thus appearing brighter. This chemical process oxidizes the organic chromophores (color compounds) in both the outer enamel and deeper dentin layers, lifting discoloration from food, drinks, and aging. Professional treatments often use higher concentrations with light activation to speed results, while at-home options use lower concentrations in trays or strips for gradual lightening.

How the Bleaching Agent Works

  • Penetration: Peroxide gels seep through microscopic pores in the enamel.

  • Oxidation: The active ingredients generate reactive oxygen molecules that interact with the stain molecules (chromophores).

  • Breaking Bonds: These molecules break the chemical bonds of the stains, changing them into colorless compounds.

Types of Stains & Whitening

  • Extrinsic Stains: Surface stains from coffee, tea, wine, and tobacco are generally easier to remove.

  • Intrinsic Stains: Deeper stains within the dentin, caused by age, trauma, or medications, are harder to treat but can often be lightened with stronger peroxide treatments.

  • Limitations: Whitening doesn't work on restorations like crowns, veneers, or fillings.
